U.S. demands to resume sanctions against Iran: no legal effect

According to CCTV news, on August 20 local time, the U.S. government officially informed the United Nations that Iran had violated the 2015 resolution and demanded that the United Nations resume all sanctions against Iran. U.S. Secretary of state pompeio went to the United Nations headquarters in New York and delivered a notice to the UN Secretary General Guterres and the rotating president of the Security Council. Before pompeio submitted the notification to the Security Council, the relevant draft of the United States had been vetoed by other members of the Security Council. Majid Takht ravanchi, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the media that the United States tried to mislead the international community and start the “quick recovery of sanctions” mechanism of resolution 2231, but the United States has unilaterally withdrawn from the agreement and has no legal effect to require the mechanism to be activated. Iran said the letter of notification submitted by the United States to the United Nations has no legal effect and is therefore unacceptable. Lavanci accused the United States of putting extreme pressure on the UN Security Council, publicizing and creating confusion through the media. In addition, lavanci also said that he thinks it is impossible for the United States to resume the so-called 31 day sanctions.
