Xinhua news agency, United Nations, August 19 (reporter Wang Jiangang) – Geng Shuang, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, said at the Security Council’s video open meeting on Syria’s political issues on the 19th that the international community should speed up the process of promoting a political settlement in Syria. In the process of political settlement of the Syrian issue, China will continue to stand firmly with the Syrian people and play a positive and constructive role. Geng Shuang said that accelerating the process of political settlement in Syria is the only way for Syria to achieve long-term stability. On the basis of existing achievements, all parties should actively and pragmatically promote inclusive political dialogue, and strive to reach an early solution that conforms to Syria’s national conditions and takes into account each other’s reasonable concerns. The United Nations should play its role as the main channel of good offices, adhere to the principle of “Syrian led and Syrian owned”, and strive to safeguard Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. Geng Shuang said that the security situation in Syria should be effectively improved. A large number of terrorist extremists still gather in the idrib region of Syria, frequently launching attacks and injuring civilians, so the anti-terrorism work can not be relaxed. All parties should unify standards, strengthen cooperation, and take more effective, cooperative and targeted anti-terrorism actions according to the proposal of special envoy Pei kairu, so as to promote peace and stability in Syria and the region. According to the general demand of Turkey, the joint patrols of Turkey along the north-west highway in recent months will help to maintain the situation. China is concerned about the recent air strikes against the Syrian government controlled areas and calls on the relevant parties to exercise restraint. Geng Shuang said unilateral sanctions against Syria should be lifted immediately. Unilateral sanctions have seriously damaged the livelihood of the Syrian people and caused great harm to innocent civilians, especially women and children. China urges the relevant countries to respond to the appeal of secretary general Guterres and special envoy Pei kairu to lift unilateral sanctions against Syria immediately, so as to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria with practical actions instead of imposing new illegal sanctions. Geng Shuang said that China attaches great importance to the humanitarian situation in Syria and shares the suffering of the Syrian people. Through bilateral and multilateral channels, China has provided a large number of humanitarian assistance, including anti epidemic assistance, to the Syrian people and refugees from abroad. China will continue to provide help to the Syrian people according to actual needs. Geng Shuang said that efforts should be made to help Syria steadily carry out economic reconstruction. This is not only the urgent demand of the Syrian people, but also the basis for Syria to achieve sustainable development and lasting peace in the future. The international community should support the Syrian government and people in their reconstruction and help them resume normal production and life as soon as possible in areas where conditions permit. There is no doubt that China will make its own efforts to this end.
