On August 17, foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked, what is your comment on Taiwan’s purchase of F-16 fighters from the United States?
Zhao Lijian said that China has always firmly opposed US arms sales to Taiwan. The US arms sales to Taiwan seriously violate the one China principle and the provisions of the three Sino US joint communiques, especially the provisions of the “August 17 Communique”, seriously damage China’s sovereignty and security interests, and seriously violate the basic norms of international relations. After the US announced the sale of 66 f-16v fighters to Taiwan in August last year, China has made a solemn stand and made a resolute response. The Taiwan issue concerns China’s territorial sovereignty and China’s core interests. China’s determination to safeguard its sovereignty and security is unswerving. China urges the US side to fully recognize the serious harm of the US arms sales to Taiwan issue, abide by the one China principle and the provisions of the three Sino US joint communiques, and stop arms sales to Taiwan and US Taiwan military ties, so as not to seriously damage Sino US relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
