EU official: the United States cannot ask the United Nations to resume sanctions against Iran

On the evening of the 20th local time, European Union High Representative for foreign and security policy Borrelli issued a statement saying that he had noted that the United States had asked the UN Security Council to launch the so-called “rapid recovery of sanctions” mechanism against Iran in accordance with resolution 2231. Borelli stressed that the United States has unilaterally withdrawn from the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue in the form of a presidential memorandum on May 8, 2018, and has not participated in any activities related to the agreement. Therefore, the United States can no longer be regarded as a signatory of the agreement, nor can it ask for the resumption of sanctions against Iraq. Borelli also said that as coordinator of the Joint Commission on Iran’s nuclear agreement, he would continue to do everything possible to ensure that the agreement is protected and fully implemented by the parties. Borrelli said the comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear issue remains a core pillar of the global non-proliferation system and contributes to regional security. (chief station reporter Zou Heyi)
