According to an EU diplomat, 24 EU Member States filed a complaint with the US State Department this week accusing us president trump of abusing sanctions to influence US foreign policy objectives.
the diplomat said all but three EU Member States signed the letter and submitted it to the US State Department on Wednesday. The diplomat asked for anonymity because the letter had not been made public.
the complaint is based on a July 17 statement by Josep Borrell, the EU’s chief diplomat, in which he denounced the US tactics of intimidation. He referred in particular to the sanctions launched by trump to block the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline linking Russia and Germany.
the relationship between the United States and the European Union, especially Germany, has fallen into a new low. Trump has imposed comprehensive tariffs on his transatlantic allies and has withdrawn from multilateral agreements such as the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear agreement. Trump also announced plans to withdraw about 12000 U.S. troops from Germany last month, saying the Merkel administration has been in arrears with defense spending.
